76% of the States Add Construction Industry Jobs in January
Between January 2013 and January 2014, construction companies added jobs in 38 of the 50 states. In addition, 27 states experienced construction employment gains between December 2013 and January 2014. According to Ken Simonson, the Chief Economist for the Associated General Contractors of America, the figures were rather robust considering the fact that many parts of the country experienced very harsh, winter weather in January.
Kansas led all states, adding nearly 6,000 jobs between January 2013 and January 2014. Other states that added high percentages included Oregon, Florida, Minnesota, Alaska, California, and Ohio.
Officials of the AGC said, “The construction employment figures were an encouraging sign that demand was rebounding after years of weak demand.” According to AGC CEO, Stephen E. Sandherr, “Right now demand seems strong in many parts of the country to keep many people working...”
